Amber

Amber, prized for its mystery and beauty from the Paleolithic to the present, is the fossilized resin produced by ancient plants that existed millions of years ago. It is a natural product and not a mineral.

Beware of pieces that are too uniform or too perfect. The process of resin from ancient plants becoming amber results in imperfections that often give amber its personality. Bubbles, plant debris, clouds, inner layers, cracks and fissures, insect parts, opacities, swirls and stress lines are present to some degree in most pieces and can help verify authenticity.

Think twice about a necklace of perfectly matched, transparent beads. Chances are they are plastic and meant to simulate amber. Also be suspicious of amber with insects where the amber part appears flawless or the insects are perfectly placed. Most insects and animals entombed in amber show signs of struggle and try to flee before becoming entombed.

In general, true ambers give the impression of lightness and warmth and a complex, glowing luster.

The main sources of amber are the Baltic region and the Dominican Republic. Baltic ambers tend to be more opaque, a lustrous buttery yellow or golden brown color range. Dominican ambers are usually brighter, more transparent yellow-golds. A necklace of Dominican amber displays more uniformity and transparency. Amber also comes in shades of green and light brown.

Amber’s greatest enemies are oxygen and light. Store amber in a cool place away from strong light. Place it in small sealable plastic bags to reduce overall exposure levels.

Ancient cultures associated amber with the sun, warmth, protection, and healing. The Mesolithic Baltic people and the ancient Greeks related amber to gods or natural spiritual forces that brought abundance, harvest or health. The Greeks thought amber was the petrified tears of the Halides, associated with the solar god Helios and his son Phaeton. A common word used today, electron, is derived from ancient Greek word for amber "elektron."

Today, Indian cultures in southern Mexico carve healing amulets from amber to ward off the evil eye and heal injuries. Islamic cultures make amber prayer beads (mesbahs) to reflect divine inspiration. Asian cultures credit amber carvings for bringing luck and abundance.
