Loose Diamonds
The Jet-Set high rollers are different from average working Joes.
They may spend big, but they get big value for their money. That's especially true with jewelry.
Most big spenders don't just buy a diamond ring. They buy the loose stones, graded by color, cut, clarity
and carat and then choose a setting for it.
Don't pay top dollar for inferior diamonds. Don't buy a diamond ring, pendent or bracelet which looks stunning and sparkling under special lights in a jewelry shop. Buy your diamonds the way the big spenders do by buying loose stones.
Get what you pay for. Let the four "Cs" help you choose the perfect stone. Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat. Contact us with the clickable link at the bottom of this page for a quote when you are thinking of a diamond purchase.
COLOR:Diamonds cover the whole spectrum of colors. The rarest of diamonds are called colorless.
Colorless diamonds allow the most reflection of light. Off-white diamonds absorb light, reducing their brilliance.
You can be see a diamond's color by placing it top-side up on a flat white surface and examining it from different
angles. Next examine it top-side down looking through the facets. Color is graded on an alphabet scale from D to Z.
| Colorless | D,E,F |
| Near Colorless | G,H,I,J |
| Faint Yellow | K,L,M,N |
| Very Light Yellow | N, O, P, Q, R |
| Light Yellow | S, T, U, V, W |
| Fancy Yellow | W, X, Y, Z |
CUT: Cut has the greatest influence on color and brilliance. A round, brilliant-cut diamond has 58 facets. This shape best shows the stone's brilliance because it allows the most light to be reflected back to your eye. Stones that look lifeless or dark in the center are probably poorly cut. When a stone is cut too deeply, it forms an angle less than the critical angle of 24.5 degrees so light (and brilliance) is lost through the sides of the stone. If the stone is cut too shallow, light passes through the diamond without reflecting back.
CLARITY: Most diamonds have internal stress fractures and tiny traces of non-crystalized carbon (after all diamonds
are carbon). These are called inclusions and usually can't be seen with the naked eye but can be seen in loose stones
under magnification. Perfect clarity means that inclusions can't be detected when the stone is examined under a 10X lens.
Inclusions make diamonds duller by absorbing light. They prevent light from being reflected back through the front of
the stone. An inclusion in the center is more visible than one near the edge. The center inclusion may be mirrored by
the facets, magnifying the dulling effect.
| FL: Flawless | No blemishes or inclusions under 10X magnification |
| IF: Internally Flawless | No inclusions, insignificant surfaces blemishes under 10X |
| VVS1, VVS2: Very, Very Slight Inclusions | Minute inclusions difficult to see under 10X |
| VS1, VS2: Very Slight Inclusions | Minor inclusions from difficult to somewhat easy-to-see face-up under 10X |
| SI1, SI2: Slight Inclusions | Noticeable inclusions that are easy (SI1) or very easy (SI2) to see under 10X. Not observable to the naked eye. |
| I1, I2, I3: Imperfect | Usually visible to the naked eye. |
CARAT: The term came from the ancient practice of weighing diamonds against the seeds from the carob tree. The system was standardized with one carat equaling 0.2 grams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. A quarter-carat diamond is 25 points or 0.25 carat. Although a carat refers to the weight of a diamond, it now refers to a particular size. If properly cut, diamonds of the same weight should be around the same size. These sizes don't apply to other stones.
